ニューヨークのクイーンズ出身。8歳のとき母親を殺人事件で亡くし、12歳からドラッグディーラーとして稼ぐ傍らラップの技術を磨く。2000年、コロムビア・レコードからのデビューアルバム発表を目前にギャングに銃撃され、全身9カ所に銃弾を浴びて生還するも、アルバムはお蔵入りに。その後、エミネムとドクター・ドレーに見いだされ、03年に発表したアルバム「Get Rich or Die Tryin」で一躍世界的ラッパーの地位を築く。 自身が主演を務めた半自伝的物語「ゲット・リッチ・オア・ダイ・トライン」（05）を皮切りに俳優業にも進出し、「勇者たちの戦場」（06）、「ボーダー」（07）、「大脱出」シリーズ（13、18、19）、「ザ・アウトロー」（18）などに出演。TVシリーズ「POWER パワー」（14～20）では製作と出演を兼ねた。近年の出演作に「エクスペンダブルズ ニューブラッド」（23）など。手がけたアルバムの売上総数は3000万枚を突破している。
