英ケンブリッジ大学で法律の勉強をするが、ショウビズの世界を選び、ロンドンのロイヤル・コート・シアターでリンゼイ・アンダーソン監督や俳優のアルバート・フィニーのアシスタントとしてキャリアをスタート。66～72年までカレル・ライス監督の映画で助監督を務め、71年の「Gumshoe（原題）」で監督デビューする。「マイ・ビューティフル・ランドレッド」（85）で脚光を浴び、「プリック・アップ」（87）を経て、「危険な関係」（88）でハリウッドに進出した。90年の「グリフターズ 詐欺師たち」でアカデミー監督賞に初ノミネートされ、「ハイロー・カントリー」（98）ではベルリン国際映画祭の銀熊賞（監督賞）を受賞。06年の「クィーン」で2度目のアカデミー監督賞候補になった。その他の代表作に「ハイ・フィデリティ」（00）、「あなたを抱きしめる日まで」（13）など。
