アイルランド人の父とロシア系ユダヤ人の母の間に生まれる。大学で演劇を始めるが中退し、1966年にコロンビアの「現金作戦」で映画デビュー、その後ユニバーサルと契約するが結果が出ず、大工として生計を立てる。なかなか日の目を見ることがなかったが、「スター・ウォーズ」（77）のハン・ソロ役で一躍スターの座を射止め、「レイダース 失われたアーク《聖櫃》」（81）に始まる「インディ・ジョーンズ」シリーズでその人気は不動のものになった。82年の「ブレードランナー」も名作SFとして根強い人気を誇る。「刑事ジョン・ブック 目撃者」（85）でアカデミー主演男優賞にノミネートされた後、90年代になると「パトリオット・ゲーム」（92）、「今そこにある危機」（94）では、CIAエージェントのジャック・ライアンを演じた。その後も「逃亡者」（93）、「エアフォース・ワン」（97）などが大ヒットを記録した。近年は、実録ドラマ「42 世界を変えた男」や「エンダーのゲーム」（ともに13）で若手たちを引き立てたほか、アクション界のオールスーターが集う「エクスペンダブルズ3 ワールドミッション」（14）にはカメオ出演。シリーズ第7弾「スター・ウォーズ フォースの覚醒」（15）では、第3弾「ジェダイの帰還（旧題：ジェダイの復讐）」（83）から32年ぶりにハン・ソロ役を演じた。私生活では「E.T.」の脚本家メリッサ・マシスンと2度結婚するが最終的に離婚に至り、10年に女優キャリスタ・フロックハート（「アリー my Love」）と再婚した。
