カナダ出身。71年に家族で米ロサンゼルスに移住する。大学卒業後、B級映画の帝王ロジャー・コーマンのスタジオに入り、「宇宙の7人」（80）の美術監督や「ギャラクシー･オブ･テラー 恐怖の惑星」（81）の第2班監督などを務める。81年「殺人魚フライングキラー」で映画監督、脚本家としてデビュー。続いて監督した「ターミネーター」（84）が大ヒットし、主演のアーノルド・シュワルツェネッガーをアクションスターに押し上げた。「ランボー 怒りの脱出」（85）の脚本を手がけ、リドリー・スコット監督から引き継いだ「エイリアン2」（86）を成功に導く。「アビス」（89）の評判は振るわなかったが、シュワルツェネッガー主演の「トゥルー・ライズ」（94）は好評を得た。 97年、大予算を投じて苦難の末に完成させた「タイタニック」（97）が空前の大ヒット。世界で18.4億ドルを稼ぎ、当時の歴代最高興収記録を打ち立て、アカデミー賞歴代最多タイの11部門での受賞も成し遂げる。12年ぶりの劇映画で3Dブームの火付け役となった「アバター」（09）は、世界興収27.8億ドルを記録し、「タイタニック」の記録を自ら塗りかえた。
