高校中退後、俳優を目指す傍らレンタルビデオ屋の店員になり、膨大な数の映画を鑑賞する生活を送る。やがて脚本を書きはじめ、「レザボアドッグス」（91）を自主製作しようとした頃、同作の脚本が俳優ハーベイ・カイテルに認められ、彼の後押しもあって監督デビュー。同作がサンダンス映画祭で好評を博し、劇場公開されて評判となる。デビュー前に脚本を手がけた「トゥルー・ロマンス」が93年にトニー・スコット監督、「ナチュラル・ボーン・キラーズ」が94年にオリバー・ストーン監督により映画化。自身監督2作目「パルプ・フィクション」（94）にはスターがこぞって出演し、カンヌ国際映画祭ではパルムドールを、アカデミー賞では脚本賞を受賞した。以降、「ジャッキー・ブラウン」（97）、「キル・ビル」2部作（03、04）など話題作を発表し、「イングロリアス・バスターズ」（09）と「ジャンゴ 繋がれざる者」（12）でもアカデミー脚本賞にノミネートされ、後者で2度目の受賞を果たした。近年の監督・脚本作に「ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム・イン・ハリウッド」（19）など。俳優としても自身の監督作や盟友ロバート・ロドリゲスの監督作などに出演している。
